CASE STUDY: Bringing Automation to the OLCC

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) is charged with regulating the sale, distribution, and responsible use of alcoholic beverages in Oregon. The OLCC has a 124,000-square-foot distribution center, through which about 1.9 million cases of alcohol are processed each year. The OLCC needed to switch from a manual warehousing and inventory control system to a sophisticated, automated system over a 10-week period in order to prepare for its busy holiday season. Able to fulfill the OLCC's order under an extremely tight deadline, AB&R supplied the agency with a full Warehouse Management (WMS) package: 14 wireless data collection terminals designed for extreme environments, four wireless scanners, several overhead scanners, and appropriate software.

The OLCC staff now roams freely throughout the warehouse, collecting and sending real-time data from up to 100 feet away. Now when a new shipment arrives at the OLCC, the container code is scanned, and the inventory is updated immediately. The barcode on each pallet shows the warehouse staff where to place the order on the floor. And when selecting orders for customers, the staff scans the barcodes on the bottles or cases to instantly verify that they have the right product. Since the fall of 2002, OLCC's productivity has increased by 20 percent and errors in its split case operation have been reduced to 20 percent.
