Systems Requirement and Design Study (SRDS)
All too often, projects are undertaken to improve technology
infrastructure, only to fail during implementation due to lack
of foresight and planning in addressing deficient processes.
Technology professionals too often assume that they understand
a process problem when, in reality, they have done little to
investigate. Many projects are commenced with little or no real
preparation in developing programs and processes that will ultimately
resolve expressed needs and implied ramifications to the business
environment.
AB&R Card is different. We approach every technology requirement
with the thorough investigatory energy that is needed to appropriately
analyze and address the opportunity.
We
call this process our Systems Requirement and Design Study
(SRDS). An SRDS is a comprehensive research and design tool
that results in the creation of a baseline document outlining
the steps, procedures, risks, and deliverables associated with
a defined scope of work.
When Is an SRDS Performed?
An SRDS is performed at the beginning of every project that
requires the integration of software with data collection terminals,
printers, or interfacing with software systems.
Why is an SRDS
Necessary?
From warehouses to hospitals, Automatic Identification
and Data Collection (AIDC) systems can streamline operations,
eliminate repetitive processes, and reduce costs. An SRDS ensures
those AIDC systems are put into place with precision and expediency.
SRDS Saves Money
Programming a "moving target" is a very costly
effort. Re-work is one of the most expensive aspects of any
technology implementation. An SRDS eliminates much of the cost
of re-programming during intstallation because the "discovery"
phase of development is conducted before any work begins. This
diligence protects both the client and AB&R Card.
SRDS Manages Time
The step-by-step procedural framework
of an SRDS ensures better planning and time management. Meetings
during implementation can be reduced; delivery milestones can
be forecasted and achieved. Project completion dates can be
set with certainty.
SRDS Ensures Accuracy
An SRDS eliminates
"scope creep". What is specified in the document is what is
delivered, thereby ensuring that the final product meets all
agreed-upon elements from the beginning of the project. An SRDS
is meticulously designed and explicitly followed.
Ask AB&R Card today about the SRDS process and obtain a sample SRDS for your
review. AB&R Card prides itself on providing
the very best solutions and services to its customers and is
proud to offer the SRDS program to every customer to ensure
mutual success of all solution implementations.
The Process
The SRDS process begins with a comprehensive interview. During
this phase, one of the Solution Engineers from the AB&R
Card Professional Services team discusses the project in-depth with
each of the principal stakeholders. This interview process includes
visiting the site of implementation and reviewing the existing
application elements. The collected information is then compiled
and used to develop the initial SRDS. Test programming is completed
in-house to ensure that basic assumptions of the plan can be assessed. Once initial program testing is complete, the SRDS
plan is completed. The SRDS is presented to the customer for
review, and upon acceptance, actual work begins.
The Content
The SRDS document begins with a description of the company and
of the expressed need. This is followed by a passage regarding
the analysis of the situation and a description of current practices
relating to the project. Project purpose and the solution recommendation
follow next. The paper then goes into an in-depth analysis relating
to the programming, hardware and software configurations. The
SRDS next provides a walk-through of the phased roll-out of
the project. It also provides information regarding the reporting
features of the implemented software and outlines the accompanying
training procedures for the running system. At the end, it details
software and services pricing beyond the scope of the SRDS.
The Details
As SRDS is infinitely detailed. Screen shots are
used on nearly every page to illustrate each step of the programming
process. The recommended solution section is broken down into
the separate hardware and software components required to make
the solution successful. Manufacturer specifications are provided
when necessary and even bubble quote illustrations are used
to further describe screen shots of the software. Legacy software
integration is addressed where appropriate and when technology
that is unfamiliar is utilized as part of the project, every
effort is made to describe and explain how the technology works.
Advantages and disadvantages are listed for programming decisions
made during the testing phase of the project, thereby enabling
the customer to understand the process of product selection
and certification.
