Security and Access Control System
Having a reliable security and access control system at your facility is important for protecting assets and data, as well as personnel. Such a system is capable of managing access for both employees and visitors. The latter may consist of vendors, contractors, temporary employees, interns, maintenance workers, and more. Real-time data access to the comings and goings of personnel and guests can guard against theft and enhance the safety of everyone in the building or area to which access is controlled.

The benefits of security and access control can be better explained with a couple of examples. For the first example, consider a construction site. Given that most construction sites are open areas, they may be subject to visitation by unwanted guests, unless the area is protected by a security system. Secure construction sites allow access to only those people who are approved to work there. This can be accomplished by scanning the worker's driver's license, which activates a turnstile if the name and photo on the license match the information in the database of authorized personnel. The worker then proceeds through the turnstile and goes on about his or her day. Upon leaving, the process is repeated.
Forcing both the name and photo to match what's on file ensures that stolen or borrowed driver's licenses cannot be used for access. Either a security guard or facial recognition technology can be used at the entry and exit points to verify that the individual is the same person pictured on the license. This type of security system -- with the license capture and turnstile -- has the added benefit of safety. In the event of an on-site disaster, it will be possible to determine the number and identities of people who were left behind during the event so that the rescue team knows exactly how many people they should be looking for. In addition, this system ensures that no one remains on the premises after-hours.
Another example of how security and access control can be applied is in a warehouse setting, where there are delivery trucks coming and going throughout the day. When a truck driver drops off the items, his or her driver's license is scanned at the gate and scanned again upon leaving. Because their identities and the times of their visits will be recorded, the drivers will be deterred from taking a little "field trip" around your facility and possibly entering areas where they do not belong.
The recommended scanner and software for implementing the security and access control systems described above are the Honeywell Xenon 1900 and Honeywell EasyDL, respectively. EasyDL is the software that enables area-imaging scanners like the Xenon 1900 to capture data from driver's licenses.
We often think of security and access control as being protective against unauthorized visitors, but it also deters employees from engaging in theft of property and confidential information such as trade secrets, employee Social Security numbers, customer databases, etc. Security and access control should also be applied to computer networks, servers, and other electronic devices to prevent unauthorized access.
Remember, all it takes is one rogue individual to wreak havoc on an organization.
