Age Verification Scanner
Age Verification Scanner Aids Retailers and Law Enforcement Officers
Having a reliable age verification system is important in retail settings where age-restricted items are sold — liquor stores, bars and clubs, casinos, stadiums, and stores that sell tobacco products or firearms. Age verification is also widely used by law enforcement officers (LEOs) who need to check the driver's licenses of people who are in violation of the law. Compliance with a host of laws can be accomplished quickly and easily with an age verification scanner that can scan the barcode on an individual's driver's license and verify his or her information against the state's motor vehicle database.
An area-imaging scanner (also known as a PDF417 barcode scanner or 2D barcode scanner) such as the Honeywell Xenon 1900 (or the Honeywell Xenon 1902) can be turned into an age verification scanner when used in conjunction with software called EasyDL, which allows you to capture data from a scanned license and, if you require, automatically populate electronic form fields with the data. Pre-populating forms is especially useful in retail stores that offer customer loyalty programs, even if age verification is not mandatory. Instead of taking the time to fill out a registration form, the customer can simply have his or her license scanned by the cashier, and all of the pertinent information will be captured, thereby saving time and avoiding hassle. An increase in revenue may also be realized because more customers will "opt in" to your program or mailing list if you make it easy for them to do so.

While the ability to fill in forms with captured data is not an insignificant benefit of age verification card scanning software, perhaps the greatest benefit of such a tool is that it is the most reliable way to verify both the identity and age of an individual who wishes to purchase certain restricted items, or an individual who has broken the law. It's not uncommon for retailers of alcohol and tobacco to visually inspect driver's licenses and use their best judgment as a means of approving the transaction. There's a problem with that approach, however. Given the ready availability of card printing supplies and equipment, it's not terribly difficult for those with criminal intent to create realistic-looking fake identification if they have the funds.
If, on the other hand, the cashier could scan the license or ID card, any customer with a fake ID would be busted because the information would not exist in the database (unless the customer stole another person's identity, but that's a different matter). Another problem is that some store employees may not follow protocol — they might instead allow their friends to purchase restricted items when there's no manager or supervisor around to witness such behavior.

To avoid the inherent problems with manual age verification (i.e., visual inspection of a license), it is strongly recommended that you use an area-imaging scanner equipped with the EasyDL software to create a reliable age verification scanner that can also be used for other purposes, as discussed above. Either of the Honeywell Xenon scanners would be a logical choice, since EasyDL, also created by Honeywell, is compatible with these scanners and can be pre-installed or purchased as an upgrade if you already have working scanners in the field.
EasyDL is compatible with the following 2D barcode scanners:
